The Reality of Thunder
Translated & Compiled by Abbas Abu Yahya
1 – What to say when one hears Thunder
From Ibn Abbas who used to say when hearing the sound of Thunder:
“سبحان الذي سبحت له“
‘Far is He removed from imperfection for Him being glorified.’
Subhan alathi Subihut lahu
Ibn Abbas would say:
“إن الرعد ملك ينعق بالغيث، كما ينعق الراعي بغنمه“.
‘Indeed thunder is an Angel which croaks with the rain, just like a shepherd croaks with his sheep. ‘
[Collected by Bukhari in Adab al Mufrad 112 & Albaani said it was Hasan but mawqoof]
2 – What is Thunder?
From Ibn Abbas who said:
أقبلت يهود إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقالت: أخبرنا ما هذا الرعد؟
The Jews turned to the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- and said: ‘Tell us what is thunder?’
The Prophet said:
ملك من ملائكة الله موكل بالسحاب، بيده مخراق من نار، يزجر به السحاب، يسوقه حيث أمره الله
‘It is an Angel from the Angels of Allaah who has been given duty of the clouds. In his hand is a sword made of fire with which he holds back the clouds, he leads the clouds wherever Allaah orders him to.’
They asked so what is this sound of Thunder?
He -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- replied:
” صوته “
‘It is his voice.’
They said: ‘You have spoken the truth.’
[Collected by Ahmad and Tirmidhi and he authenticated and Albaani declared it Hasan in Silsilah Saheehah 4/491]
TO: THE SISTER WHO CRIED QUIETLY IN TARAWEEH AND ALL THOSE STRUGGLING THIS RAMADAN
The sister who is spending Ramadan by herself,
The sister who is lonely because she’s not married,
The sister who is lonely in her marriage,
The sister who is widowed and struggling to get through each day,
The sister who is divorced and trying to get back on her feet,
The sister who is struggling to find work,
The sister who has been trying for a baby for years, and endures regular hurtful comments from others,
The sister who has had IVF so many times, but still remains childless,
The sister who miscarried, again, and felt like a piece of her heart broke when she lost her baby,
The sister who is trying her best to fulfil her obligations and take care of her kids, but is so so tired,
The sister whose child is sick,
The sister who has lost someone she loves, and she misses them everyday,
The sister who is struggling with anxiety or depression,
The sister whose world has been devastated and her life scattered by shocking news,
To every one of you, and all the other sisters who are facing innumerable challenges!
Know, dear sister, your solace and comfort lies with Allah, Ar-Rahman, the source of our relief and the reliever of our distress. He is Able to Do All Things.
Turn to Him and cry. Pour your heart out to Him. He is the One who can bring you ease, who can set right your affairs, who can relieve the burden that is weighing on your heart and know, for your patience, your reward awaits you in Jannah, in shaa Allah!
Hold on to Allah and know, with absolute certainty that He will never leave you, never let you down and that your reward lies with Him. He is the Most Merciful, and He is ever near.
BE KIND TO EVERYONE!
A reminder to myself, first and foremost, that we never know what others may be facing in silence.
As we pray tonight and every time, let’s remember the sisters who are struggling in our du’a.
And as we move through this blessed month and beyond, let’s make the effort to be compassionate, to help where we can, to ease the burden of others if we are able, to be patient and to be kind to everyone.
Your silent du’a for her might be answered!
The *SHORTEST* but *POWERFUL* Dua – *_Are you aware of it_* ?
Al-‘Abbās, the uncle of the Prophet , came to the Prophet (sallahu aalaihe wa Salam) and said:*“Ya Rasūlullāh, teach me a du’ā’.”*
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “O my uncle, say:
*Allāhumma inni asaluka al āfiyah*
(O Allāh, I ask you for *āfiyah*)
Now, What is *āfiyah* ?
*Āfiyah* means “to save me from any afflictions. To be healthy, you are in *āfiyah*.
To have enough money to live, you are in *āfiyah*.
To have your children protected, you are in *āfiyah*.
And if you are forgiven and not punished, you are in *āfiyah*.
*Āfiyah* means :
“*O Allāh, protect me from any pain and suffering*” This includes Duniya and Aakhirah.
Al-‘Abbās thought about this for a while, and then he came back after a few days and said (paraphrased):
“Ya Rasūlullāh, this du’ā’ seems a little short. I want something big.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “My dear uncle, ask Allāh for *’āfiyah*, for wallāhi, you cannot be given anything better than *’āfiyah*.”
It is a simple Du’ā’. Sincerely mean what you say.
“O Allāh, I ask You to be saved from any distress, grief, hardship, harm. Don’t test me.”
All of this is included in *Allāhumma inni asaluka al-‘āfiyah*
